The Need for Wilderness Protection

The wilderness is an essential part of nature. By wilderness, we mean the area of land within a country that has no development, no roads and is what is left remaining of the pristine wild lands that stretched from coast to coast in the past.

You may ask, 'but why do we need the wilderness?' Well, the wilderness has numerous benefits. Not only does it provide a place for us to fish or to camp, but it also is a natural habitat for our wildlife, is a source of living for local communities around it and cleans the air that we breathe. There are a lot of reasons why we must protect the wilderness. For one, it helps protect the watersheds. Watersheds are essential as they help to supply clean water to the communities that live around the wilderness and the animals that live in them. As mentioned earlier the wilderness is free from air borne pollution and helps to filter and clean the air that we breathe.

We all love taking a break sometime and going on a trip to see some wildlife. The wilderness provides a place where the wildlife can call home. It provides the habitat and the food on which they depend upon for their existence. If the wilderness were not there, we would have a huge problem-what we call human wildlife conflict as the animals would lose their home and would have to look for other alternative homes. Normally, they would invade our homes and the local communities closest to the wilderness would suffer due to invasion form the animals.

The Wilderness International also provides grounds for our favorite recreation activities like camping, watching wildlife, canoeing, fishing, hunting and hiking. If we were to destroy it, we would lose a place to enjoy ourselves in doing all these recreation activities.

The best way to protect the wilderness has been through the law, through what we call wilderness designation. Through wilderness designation, the wildness is protected from the harmful effects of over-development. These negative effects include habitat destruction and pollution which have increased due to increased industrialization and over population. Lawmakers play a crucial part in making laws to protect the wilderness but governments also work with institutions and local communities to raise awareness about the need to protect the wilderness. When a law has been passed to designate a wilderness, it may take years to implement and see the results. It is crucial to be patient and at the same time aggressive in enforcing this law.
